Why
Curious to find out more about the fascinating world of 6mm sci-fi miniatures and while surfing the internet, I have arrived at one site about Polyversal miniature game. It was a successful Kickstarter project, but with not such a successful power to bring the required miniatures for the game. I did not follow the Kickstarter project or the whole affair after, what I was impressed about was the quality of the miniatures, collected from many producers. Among them, were the Marhaf miniatures (from the UN faction from Polyversal). And how can you not be impressed! They were gorgeous, they make a stand, they have personality, well, you get the point. After other months of just looking at those miniatures I have found out that a new company, Plasmablast Games produces 6mm sci-fi miniatures and among them Marhaf. I looked at their site and other factions besides Marhaf (Progenitors and Orbital) and decided that it was worth investing and collecting this line of miniatures.
How
All of the miniatures come unpainted and require some assemble. I do not remember having trouble in assembling the miniatures or to be necessary to clean them. Good metal, good quality, great services from the company (this is not a paid review, as all this site in case you wonder; when it is the case, if it will ever be, I will make an appropriate mention; I do it for the community of 6mm miniatures fans). Applying black primer and some coats of paints followed, but I did not invested too much time in painting. A quick Brown Sand paint from Vallejo for the basic coat and some details with one or two Vallejo colors per faction. I also did a wash with Dark Brown 514 from Vallejo. It is quick and easy to paint in wargaming style, could
take a little bit more if you want something else, but the miniatures, like those from Alternative Armies,
are screaming for a paint and a little play, so you can
understand the urge to finish the job. All the process was fun, and here
the quality of the miniatures helps a lot. If you want to see a little bit about the process of painting some miniatures in images and info have a look at Tigerclaw Super Heavy Tank and Valgaross Super Heavy Tank.
Results
Under each photo that can be enlarged there is the name of the painted
miniature in alphabetically order and classified in each of the three factions (lines of miniatures): Marhaf, Orbital
and Progenitors. Also there is a
link that leads you to further images if you are more interested in a
respective miniatures, since I have taken, for most of the miniatures,
photos from different angles. You can
you use the search function to
find out more easily when you want to find something in particular, among the 45 miniatures collected (not all of the Plasmablast miniatures, read below, in Review section, the reasons).
Review
The miniatures line is
composed of infantry, land and
air vehicles and also some turrets. Among land vehicles, we can easily observe many tanks, in fact, many tracked tanks, but also some hover vehicles for the Orbital faction, so quite near sci-fi environment in general. There are also wheeled vehicles, many for recon purposes. Some of them like the trikes and atv remind me of the computer game Dark Reign, so another reason to have Plasmablast Games miniatures for me. Did I mention that the company is from Greece? Yes, it is and because mostly when talking about European miniatures producers you basically say UK manufacturers, then I was, again, curious to find out more. I can tell you that everything was more than ok for the company established in late 2018: prices, services and of course the quality of miniatures.
Now, one thing to improve is the stocking of miniatures. Many are for many months out of stock. So, the miniature line needs more improving and expanding activities and of course, restock-rectock! Because of this, the miniatures presented here are only a part (though a good one) of the miniatures from Plasmablast. I also cannot say that there were no lately improvements, as you can see the face-lift of Barracuda, Spiderblade, Wolfbite and Gecko miniatures. Orbital miniatures I think need the most updating, and also the factions/line of miniatures presented need more expanding.
The miniatures have many great details of good quality and the thing that I like most is the design of miniatures. You can see that a lot of work and talent was put in the whole process. I like many models, I just want to point at the Gnalok Missile ATV, Graessen IFV and Maarghast Heavy Assault Tank. Not talking about beasts like Valgaross Super Heavy Tank or Tigerclaw Super Heavy Tank. From air vehicles I like Leehark and Shadowasp. The infantry is good, but not miniatures to represent a strong point for Plasmablast. I like the thing that turret miniatures are present.
As for packaging, you can buy individual miniatures, except for infantry, which comes in packs of 6 models, mostly different poses, which is always a plus. Also, the air vehicles come with a clear base. Some of the miniatures have 2 or 5 variants. For example, Spiderblade Light Tank has 5: Tank Destroyer, Infantry Support, Heavy Missiles, Artillery and Multi-Sensor Array. This makes it easy for the producer to have many models and efficient in terms of money, as it has a chasis to mount different weapons and endowments, but also is good for us, if we like the chasis and want to see it mounted with different capabilities. Another good aspect to take into consideration is if Plasmablast miniatures are true to the scale, in fact measure, of 6mm. This can be tricky to analyze, but compared to other miniatures (from GZG, Scotia Grendel, Brigade Models, Alternative Armies, to name a few manufacturers) I can tell you that they trully are.
I am very pleased that I have tried these miniatures from Plasmablast. Good details and overall quality, some of them need updates in terms of design and some of them need restock. Otherwise, they assemble fast, no worries about cleaning them to much and they paint fast. Thumbs up from me!
